Got Sole LA, One Saturday in Downtown

One Saturday at the LA Convention Center. A sneaker convention where a great deal of the floor, and most of the best dressing, turned out to be clothes.

Wear Relaxed

Got Sole ran for one Saturday at the Los Angeles Convention Center, doors at noon and out by six. It is a buy/sell/trade convention — sneakers, trading cards, collectibles — and the resale tables in the middle of the hall never stopped moving.

We photographed it all afternoon. 90 frames from that day are archived here, and what follows is what they show.

The floor was not only shoes. One stall had been hung like a market stall, football jerseys and a Rams varsity jacket filling the wall from the tabletop to above head height. Rails of vintage ran alongside. LA labels sold their own tees off folding tables. People shopped it the way you shop a market — pulling things off hangers, holding them up against themselves, putting them back.

Some of the clearest dressing in the building was behind the tables rather than in front of them. A man held up a Fish Scale Los Angeles tee he was selling while wearing one himself, a rail of the same shirt behind his shoulder. One booth had committed completely: the tablecloth, the rug on the concrete, the gift bags, the backpacks for sale and the beanies on the crew were all in the same red-and-gold palette, though not the same print — a diamond monogram on the cloth, a floral on the fleece, a script graphic on the hats.

There is an obvious counterexample, and it was one of the biggest stands in the building. At the SHEIN booth, three people in lanyards stood and sat around a folding table, under a backdrop advertising the world's number one fashion website. None of them wore anything with visible branding, and one badge read SPONSOR.

It ran the other way as well. Plenty of people walked in wearing Got Sole's own merch, bought at a previous show or that morning.

The full photographic record from the day — every eligible frame, including the ones never published anywhere else — is on the Got Sole LA event page. That is the archive, not the edit.
