The sunglasses catch you first, small and dark and a little vintage in shape, sitting under hair combed back and still. It reads confident before you even get to the shirt.
The plaid shirt is doing something specific by staying untucked. It breaks the hem line right at the hip, so the tapered trousers underneath get to narrow gradually instead of cutting off sharp at a belt. That's the trick that keeps a fairly structured outfit from looking stiff.
Red sneakers against dark brown trousers is the one loud choice in the whole look, and it works because everything else stays muted, black and white check, brown pants, a plain watch. One point of color is enough.
Little Tokyo's lanterns overhead give the frame its own texture without touching the outfit at all, just red and white paper shapes echoing the red in the shoes. Sometimes the backdrop rhymes with the clothes without either one trying to.
