The Loud Half Is Below the Waist
Open cream camp shirt, bandana-print long shorts
A cream short-sleeve camp shirt worn open over a black tee, a gold rope chain with a pendant, black backpack, black cap with sunglasses pushed up on the brim, black-and-white bandana-print long shorts with a cartoon skull panel, white crew socks and red slides, standing on a stationary skateboard.
See the Story
Everything above the waist is deliberately quiet. A plain cream camp shirt, open, over a plain black tee, with one gold chain doing all the decorative work. It reads almost like workwear until you get to the shorts.
Then the whole outfit changes register. The shorts carry a full bandana paisley print, a cartoon skull with crossed-out eyes, a heartbeat line, lettering — four separate graphic ideas competing in one garment. On most people that would take over. Here it doesn't, because the top half refuses to compete.
The red slides are the part that ties it. They pick up the red buried in the shorts print and pull it down to the ground, and the white crew socks underneath stop them reading as beachwear. It's a long way from the boardwalk's usual flip-flop default.
He's stopped on the board rather than riding it, hands loose, looking straight down the lens. Behind him a market tent and a rack of shirts, palms going up out of frame. Nothing about the stance is performed — he was going somewhere and paused.
