A 2001 Finals Tee in Full Midday

The tee is doing all the talking — a full-colour 2001 Finals print, both players, the trophy between them, the sort of thing that was sold outside an arena and has outlived the result. It is worn a size or two up and reaches mid-thigh over the shorts.

Underneath it, almost nothing: light denim cutoffs that barely show, white crew socks pulled up, white sneakers. The whole bottom half is there to disappear.

He is in the same arrangement, a white graphic tee over black shorts and grey runners, which is why they read as a pair without matching.

The light is hard and directly overhead and the shadows are short and black on the asphalt. It is the least flattering hour at this market and the tee survives it, because a print that saturated does not need help.
