A World Cup Jersey and a Woven Stripe

Green Mexico jersey and a striped woven top

A green Mexico football jersey printed with Aztec glyphwork, worn with a red bandana tied over the hair, a long cross pendant, charcoal cargo shorts, a black walking boot on one leg and a chunky platform boot on the other, walking beside a multicoloured striped woven top, light denim cutoffs, tortoiseshell sunglasses and olive leather sandals.

See the Story

The jersey is the loudest thing in the frame and it earns it. Aztec glyphwork printed across the whole front in two greens, the federation crest on one side, ABA Sport on the other, the collar done as a white polo placket. It is a football shirt being worn as a shirt rather than as team kit, with a red bandana tied over the hair and a long cross pendant sitting over the print.

Next to it, the woven stripe is doing the opposite kind of work — narrow bands of teal, orange and purple on black, soft and boxy, with light denim cutoffs and flat olive sandals. Two completely different relationships to colour, neither of them quiet.

What makes it a photograph rather than two outfits is that they are plainly together and plainly enjoying it. Both mid-stride, both laughing at the same thing, one of them turning slightly toward the other. Thirty or forty years apart and dressed from the same market.

Behind them the tents run back in a row with racks of clothing on both sides. This is what the crowd at a flea market actually looks like, which is a wider range of people than most street photography admits.

What We’re Seeing

  • Aztec glyph print across the jersey
  • Red bandana tied over the hair
  • Long cross pendant over the print
  • Narrow woven stripes in teal and orange
  • Both mid-stride, both laughing
